DEFINITIONS

What the numbers mean

01

Implied probability

The probability represented by decimal odds before adjusting for bookmaker margin. The basic formula is 100 divided by the decimal odds.

02

Fair odds

The decimal price that corresponds to a probability estimate without an added margin. Divide 100 by the probability percentage.

03

Probability difference

Your probability estimate minus the market-implied probability. It describes disagreement between two estimates, not a guaranteed advantage.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: decimal odds of 1.85

Odds of 1.85 represent an implied probability of approximately 54.05%. If an independent model estimates the same outcome at 60%, its fair odds would be 1.67. The difference is 5.95 percentage points. That gap may be worth investigating, but it does not account for every source of uncertainty.

MARKET CONTEXT

Why bookmaker margin matters

In a complete market, the implied probabilities of all outcomes often add up to more than 100%. The amount above 100% is commonly called overround or margin. For a cleaner comparison, analysts may normalize all outcomes first. This single-odds calculator intentionally shows the direct implied probability so the formula stays transparent.
