1. Read the handicap as a score adjustment
A team at −0.5 must finish ahead after the handicap is applied. A team at +0.5 wins the market if it wins or draws under the relevant time rules.
The handicap changes market settlement, not the actual final score. Always keep the selected team, sign and period together.
- Team −0.5 → must win
- Team +0.5 → win or draw
- Team 0 → draw returns the stake
2. Whole-number lines can push
At −1.0, a one-goal win produces an adjusted draw and normally a refund. A two-goal-or-greater win settles as a win; a draw or defeat settles as a loss.
The mirror applies to +1.0: losing by exactly one produces a refund, while a draw, win or narrower adjusted advantage settles favourably.
3. Quarter lines split the stake
A +0.25 position is half on handicap 0 and half on +0.5. A draw therefore creates a refund on one half and a win on the other. A −0.25 position is half on 0 and half on −0.5, so a draw creates a refund on one half and a loss on the other.
Likewise, +0.75 splits into +0.5 and +1.0, while −0.75 splits into −0.5 and −1.0. The displayed result can be a full win, half win, refund, half loss or full loss.
4. Handicap 0 connects to Draw No Bet
Asian handicap 0 uses the same basic win, refund-on-draw and loss structure commonly described as Draw No Bet. The separate guide explains its conditional probability interpretation.
Quarter lines should not be simplified to handicap 0 because only half of the stake may use that condition.
5. Model the margin of victory
A match-winner probability alone does not describe the chance of winning by two goals, landing exactly on one goal or losing within a protected margin.
A handicap analysis needs a score-difference distribution and must match the exact line. Similar prices on −0.5 and −0.75 do not represent the same risk.
6. Check local settlement rules
Regulation time, overtime, abandoned events and sport-specific scoring can change settlement. Operator rules control the actual transaction.
